Nobel K5 FAQ’s
K5 Systems are fully independent, electrically actuated wet chemical systems which utilise spot heat detectors to detect fire conditions. The detectors are placed directly over the appliance being protected or in the extract air flow above that appliance. The cooking appliances can be individually protected or multiple systems can be configured to suit the demands of any galley.
The K5 systems can be operated manually using push button switches located at strategic positions around the kitchen or directly from the fascia of the NFS4 control panel. The K5 galley systems are fully independent systems that can be used to protect a variety of cooking appliances, mainly the deep fat fryer/s on board.
FAQ
The K-5 Galley System is a wet chemical fire suppression system which has been designed to suppress fires in deep fat fryers. Due to the changes in the SOLAS regulations, new regulations mean new demands have been placed on ship owners and operators to ensure the health and safety afforded to the ship and crew is upgraded.
To meet that requirement, development has been undertaken to design a complimentary version of the highly successful and well established K Series wet chemical fire suppression system. It has been tested in accordance with the requirements of International Standard ISO15371 : 2000(E) Ships and marine technology – Fire-extinguishing systems for protection of galley deep-fat cooking equipment – Fire Tests.
The K5 cylinders are small, self-contained, and mounted either vertically or horizontal with a maximum 10m pipe run to the nozzle. They do not take up valuable floor space.
Yes. The units are able to be recharged after use.
No. the K5 galley systems are extremely cost effective. While actual costs will vary based on the specific system installation, in general, an installed system will be significantly less expensive than alternatives. This is due to the small amount of agent required and the fact that installation costs can be reduced because of the elimination of wire pulleys, fuseable links, etc.
No, oxygen levels are not affected.
The cylinder and pipe-work is made from Stainless steel and should be checked thoroughly on an annual basis and a service exchange of the cylinder should be carried out every 5 years by a qualified engineer. We recommend the cylinder is changed every 10 years.
In tests and in real fire situations a rapid fire knockdown has been achieved, showing that the K5 galley system is an extremely effective fire suppression system when dealing with fires containing cooking oils.
The K5 galley fire suppression system can be installed on any type of boat that has a requirement for having a cooking appliance protected. The K5 system has been supplied to Navy ships, cruise liners, super yachts, workboats, etc.
The K5 galley systems are fully independent systems that can be used to protect a variety of cooking appliances, mainly the deep fat fryer/s on board. These cooking appliances can be individually protected or multiple systems can be configured to suit any galley set up.
Maintenance costs related to the K5 galley system are minimal and involve only periodic visual examination of the control panel and nozzle covers to insure that there are no fault indications or damage and that the system installation remains in the same configuration as that originally designed. Annual inspection of the electrical activated system and pipe-work is required, this will include removal and cleaning of nozzles, etc.
Yes. The wet chemical is a neutral ph (7.8) liquid fire suppressant, which has been formulated to suppress fires involving cooking oils and grease. It will not damage surrounding work surfaces and is easy to wash away after discharge using proprietary cleaning products.

Yes. We have had a number of very successful incidents where the K5 system has been used to extinguish real cooking appliance fire situations.
The K-5 Galley Fire Suppression System is designed to distribute a wet chemical fire suppressant through a single nozzle which is located directly above a deep fat fryer. The system may be used to protect fryers with maximum pan dimensions of 565 x 500 x 340mm.
